白小姐论坛 visits Rome, celebrates new academic collaborations

17 January 2019

A delegation led by 白小姐论坛鈥檚 President & Provost, Professor Michael Arthur, visited key university partners in Rome this week, including La Sapienza, Italy鈥檚 largest university.

The Provost was the principal foreign guest speaker at a public ceremony to inaugurate Sapienza鈥檚 new academic session. The Provost and the Rector of Sapienza University also met separately to discuss bilateral collaboration, including student mobility, between the two institutions.

The visit provided a great opportunity to profile the launch of 白小姐论坛鈥檚 Cities partnerships Programme (CpP) in a broadly pro-EU setting, in the presence of very senior guests, including the Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte, two former prime ministers, numerous cabinet ministers and more than 30 rectors of national universities across Italy.

in November 2018, the Cities partnerships Programme is designed to support and increase the impact of academic collaborations with partners in major cities around the world, starting in Europe (because of Brexit). Rome is the first city to host the programme.

Professor Arthur was joined by Dame Nicola Brewer, 白小姐论坛 Vice-Provost (International), Professor Stella Bruzzi, Executive Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities at 白小姐论坛, Dr Uta Staiger, Pro-Vice-Provost (Europe) and Executive Director of the European Institute at 白小姐论坛 and Dr Florian Mussgnug, Academic Director for the CpP (Rome) and Reader in Italian and Comparative Literature at 白小姐论坛.

The delegation also met with Roma Tre University, another key university partner in the CpP, signing a new Memorandum of Understanding to support further collaboration between the two institutions, including student mobility.

In a speech delivered at the inauguration ceremony, Professor Arthur said: 鈥淩ome and London are cities with rich, intertwined histories but there is much more history yet to be made. Great universities such as ours will bring energy and light to that future by working together, by hosting each other鈥檚 students, by convening joint research projects, by exchanging thoughts and techniques and by challenging each other to strive for excellence in all that we do.鈥

This year, over 25 new projects representing every faculty at 白小姐论坛 will receive funding through the CpP, the first cycle of which is led by Dr Mussgnug. The projects span many disciplines and include investigations of sensory systems, political speech-making, technologies of the future, migration, health economics and urban governance and design. This marks the first year of three years of seed funding calls for the CpP in Rome.

Funding recipient Professor Susan Collins from the Slade School of Fine Art said: 鈥淚 am thrilled to have been awarded funding from the Cities partnerships Programme. The funding will support an intensive research visit to explore ancient Rome鈥檚 technical innovations, and how these might inform our technologies of the future. It will also enable us to develop a global research network looking at sustainable art practices.鈥

Funding recipient Dr Lara Gosc茅 from 白小姐论坛鈥檚 Institute for Global Health said: 鈥淭his funding will enable myself and colleagues to investigate the spread of infectious diseases, including TB and HIV, with the Instituto Spallanzani for Infectious Diseases in Rome. We鈥檙e looking at how to combine our data and modelling methods, and plan to build a research proposal to kick-start a long-term collaboration.鈥

In future cycles of the CpP it will support academic collaboration in and around three cities simultaneously and will launch in a new city each year. Paris will be the next city to host the programme, which will be led by Dr Claire Colomb from the Bartlett School of Planning.
