The inaugural °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Festival of the Moving Image will be held at the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Bloomsbury Theatre from 29 October to 1 November 2007.

The festival will be hosted by °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Spanish & Latin American Studies and the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Film Studies programme, and will be free to all. It has been created to provide film students with a platform for their works, with the aim of becoming a leading university event for the exhibition, interpretation and study of audiovisual culture.

This first festival 'Por Primera Vez' ['For the First Time'] is devoted to the audiovisual culture of the Americas. It coincides with and celebrates the cinematic work of Gabriel García Márquez and the 40th anniversary of the publication of his masterpiece 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'. It also commemorates the 40th anniversary of the New Latin American Cinema Movement; the centenary of Frida Kahlo's birth; and the 200th anniversary of the end of the slave trade in the British colonies.

The programme of screenings, workshops and presentations will include short films made by °×С½ãÂÛ̳ students who attended this year's film-making summer school in Cuba, organised by Professor Stephen Hart of °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Spanish & Latin American Studies.

The festival will open with a specially commissioned performance by Yat-Sen Chang, Cuban ballet dancer and Principal of the English National Ballet.

The event will be open to all, free of charge and with no need to book. It is supported by °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Futures, Unison-°×С½ãÂÛ̳ branch, the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Film & TV Society and the British-Cuban Heritage Foundation.
