°×С½ãÂÛ̳ Mathematics runs revision classes for GCSE students

21 April 2006

From this Saturday, °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Mathematics will be hosting four weekly GCSE mathematics revision classes in the Gustave Tuck lecture theatre.

°×С½ãÂÛ̳ Mathematics is part of The Further Maths Network, which has established further mathematics centres across the country as part of an effort to promote the Further Mathematics A Level. The qualification is of growing importance for applications to °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Mathematics, which is experiencing a rise in applications and increased competition for places.

Dr Robert Bowles, Admissions Tutor for mathematics, said: "We are moving towards a time when Further Mathematics A Level will be compulsory for applications to °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Mathematics, but it is also useful for other degree programmes, such as engineering and sciences. The subject is taken much more frequently by students at independent schools than in the maintained sector. It is important for widening participation that we help to encourage the uptake of Further Mathematics in all schools."

The sessions are for around 70 year-11 students from state schools across the boroughs of Haringey, Camden and Islington.

Brian Housden, who manages the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ centre, said: "We are very pleased to have such strong attendance at these events. We hope to expand the programme to include Enfield and Barnet as well in future. It is important that we help to ensure that everyone in the area has access to Further Mathematics A Level."
