21 October 2003
°×С½ãÂÛ̳ Art Collections will launch a new exhibition, 'Paper Cities: Topography and Imagination in Urban Europe c1490-1780', on 15 October 2003.

The exhibition charts individual artists' engagement with various places, so visitors can explore Rembrandt's Amsterdam, Hollar's London, Canaletto's Venice and Piranesi's Rome.
°×С½ãÂÛ̳ Art Collections Assistant Curator, Dr Tarnya Cooper commented: "Artists frequently created dramatic likenesses of place rather than an accurate depiction of an actual site. For 18th-century audiences, topographical views served as a stimulus for foreign travel, but also created armchair tourists who would use such images to roam Europe virtually."
The show is open Wednesday to Friday, 1-5pm - except during Christmas
and the New Year - and runs until March 2004. It is accompanied by a fully
illustrated catalogue and a number of events, including lunch-time gallery talks.
