Description

Looking ahead and into the future, this module looks into a nascent, unexplored area that has not been studied in the strategic management of projects – the legacy of projects. The types of projects that you are likely to be involved in, either currently or in future, are complex and probably long-lived, they reflect Grand Challenges. Legacy issues are paramount to the client or sponsor, and the society at large, and from the front-end and with a strategic perspective we can ensure that our projects will have impact beyond commercial arrangements. When do we start thinking about legacy, and what are the added challenges that we need to be considering at the front-end of the projects? Can the legacy of a project be designed and what is your role in this process? This module considers how you can frame the initial aims and objectives of a project so that its legacy shapes new business opportunities and a better world.

Aims:

  • Understand the notion of project legacy and what are the strategic opportunities and challenges with managing projects in the long term
  • Understand what is your role in shaping the legacy of the project and build on examples that we borrow from practice where SMP alumni have researched and designed the legacy of their projects.

Issues the Module will tackle:

The module takes an innovative approach to extending the boundaries of the project once again. Projects are not understood as vehicles of execution, but also involve the strategic phase, the front-end where they are designed. But what happens after a project has been delivered in a world that is transforming constantly and faces Grand Challenges? Where is the value of the project delivered and what are the qualities of leaders who design and deliver projects that have an important legacy?

Learning objectives:

  • Critically evaluate project legacy as a source of competitiveness in the strategic management of projects.
  • Critically evaluate a conceptual and theoretical understanding of the notion of legacy and its implication in business.
  • Critically evaluate the experiences of SMP Alumni who have led projects designed to have a legacy.
