The Fetal & Perinatal Medicine module requires a background in a related scientific or social science discipline, or a professional health qualification (medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology, social work). The module is compulsory for students on the MSc Reproductive Genetics & Fetal Medicine. Preference will be given to Institute for Women's Health students for whom this module is compulsory and to Institute for Women's Health students for whom this is a recommended option.

Description

Fetal and Perinatal Medicine provides an introduction to the diagnosis and management aspects of fetal and perinatal medicine from congenital infections, major fetal complications such as hydrops, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), twins, fetal therapy and fetal surgery, and rhesus disease, to the role of the pathologist, the role of the neonatologist, problems of prematurity, gene therapy and stem cell transplantation and global issues in healthcare distribution. The module aims at providing knowledge on the theory of fetal medicine and its roles in modern medicine.

After taking this module, you should be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • The practice of fetal medicine and management of the fetus in-utero and the premature newborn;
  • The ethical issues surrounding fetal and neonatal medicine and why they are important in modern society

The module comprises lectures by international clinical leaders in the field of fetal medicine, and tutorals and discussions of ethical issues in feta and neonatal medicine.
