LGBTQ+ Equality Implementation Group (LEIG)

Information on the terms of reference, news and updates, and minutes of past meetings for the LGBTQ+ Equality Implementation Group (LEIG)

Overview of the Group

The LGBTQ+ Equality Implementation Group (LEIG) has been created to further enable °×С½ãÂÛ̳ to understand and support the concerns and priorities of our members of the LGBTQ+ community. The LEIG operates as a task and finish group, projected to conclude by the end of November 2023.

The purpose of the LEIG is to identify and develop a set of actions and an implementation plan that will tackle inequality, marginalisation and discrimination experienced by LGBTQ+ staff and students at °×С½ãÂÛ̳, with particular attention given to trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming members of our community.

The LEIG reports directly to °×С½ãÂÛ̳’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, and via that to °×С½ãÂÛ̳’s University Management Committee (UMC). As a time-limited group, the LEIG will complement the ongoing work of the LGBTQ+ Equality Steering Group (LESG).
Membership includes the LGBTQ+ Equality Envoy, the UMC LGBTQ+ Champion, the EDI LGBTQ+ lead, existing members of LESG together with representation from the °×С½ãÂÛ̳ Trans Network, the Student Union, academic staff with expertise in LGBTQ+ studies and professional services staff.

The Implementation Group will:

  1. Review data and other information on the profile of LGBTQ+ staff and students at °×С½ãÂÛ̳ to inform the work of the group.Ìý
  2. Review what is known about the experiences of LGBTQ+ staff and students at °×С½ãÂÛ̳.
  3. Review °×С½ãÂÛ̳’s current work on LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion, including drawing on the institutional Silver Athena SWAN submission and action plan: Athena SWAN at °×С½ãÂÛ̳ | Office of the President and Provost
  4. Review and record the inclusion work and implementation of best practice undertaken by LESG to date.
  5. Analyse and identify areas of inequality and under-representation within the LGBTQ+ umbrella, and options to redress these.
  6. Review best practice in advancing LGBTQ+ equality, inside and outside HE
  7. Develop an action plan, which includes interventions and targets that are considered necessary to strengthen and enhance °×С½ãÂÛ̳’s work on LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion, in dialogue with LESG.
  8. Consider the structures and resources needed to ensure follow through and consistent delivery of the programme over time and across the whole institution
  9. Ensure LEIG’s work is evidenced-based and seeks to support °×С½ãÂÛ̳ in meeting its duty to foster good relations and ensure accuracy in the information on issues of LGBTQ+ equality that is published and used to influence °×С½ãÂÛ̳ policy alongside its other statutory duties.
